2725 An extremely rare month duration grande sonnerie Dachluhr. The large rosewood Dachluhr case has the unusual feature of very fine double stringing of ivory rather than the more normal light coloured wood. The edges have ripple mouldings which is in keeping with the late date of this clock. It has an opening hood door below which there is a ripple moulding and then a second opening trunk door to give access to the pendulum. The clock has a typical under curved base again with ivory stringing and some ripple moulding decoration. The roof top is relatively shallow with the same ripple decoration. The large 9" enamel dial retains its original signature for the maker ‘Andreas Alzinger in Wien.’ It has an outer minute ring, fine Roman numerals and a small seconds dial below 12 o’clock. It is enclosed within a fine and ornate gilded engine turned bezel. The substantial month duration grande sonnerie movement is mounted into the case via a seatboard and strikes the quarters and hours on two steel gongs mounted on a massive bracket fixed to the backplate. The movement has a third plate at the top which enabled easier rebuilding of the movement after repair and also got rid of some of the flexing that one gets with longer arbors. The movement has very thick plates for a Viennese clock and chunky pillars required to take the power needed for a month duration grande sonnerie. The under dial work is of the usual fine quality found on these clocks. The clock has a large wood rod pendulum with a heavy brass bob hung by a spring from a mounting block on the backboard. It has a fine and large rating nut and indicator of blued steel. The three driving weights are heavy, as one would expect since the movement has to complete 27,000 hammer blows during the month. |

Month duration grande sonnerie clocks are always very rare and our experience is that the Viennese would have done more year duration timepieces than they did month duration grande sonnerie clocks. All in all a fine, rare and imposing mid period Viennese clock. Length: 55" (140 cms.) Sold The maker, Andreas Alzinger, is noted as working as a Viennese Master Clockmaker between 1827 and his death in 1847. Viennese Masters were the most highly rated of all the Viennese clockmakers. Many clockmakers did not achieve elevation to this status.
