2705 A superb year duration floor standing mahogany Laterndluhr, the case of the very finest proportions has a panelled base standing on a small plinth with well figured veneers. The trunk has fractional tapering on the side members in order to give the perfect proportions, this is hardly visible unless you look closely. The trunk has glass both to the sides and to the front door. The lift off and opening hood has a glazed front door but the side panels are in solid wood inlaid with stringing. The roof top, the sides of the trunk and the whole case are profusely strung with boxwood stringing. The exquisite two piece dial is surrounded by a gilded engine turned bezel of the finest quality and the centre of the dial is again gilded and engine turned with a small signature plaque signed for the maker "Binder in Wien". The pendulum which has a heavy brass bob is a five rod true gridiron. The large driving weight to give it its year duration falls down behind the pendulum rod. The movement is completely brass enclosed, hence the reason for having wooden sides to the hood door as there is in fact very little to see. As was done by some of the early makers, Joseph Binder has produced this movement on a one plate principal with all of the wheelwork running with bridges rather than with a second plate. The quality of the wheelwork and the unusual nature of the movement are superb. As one would expect it has a Graham’s dead beat escapement, maintaining power and for a year duration clock runs on a really quite small weight. The main barrel extends out from the back of the movement which enables the weight to run down behind the pendulum. Height: 6' 0" (183 cms.) Sold |
