AN EXTREMELY ELEGANT CHERRY CASED MONTH DURATION VIENNESE DACHLUHR. CIRCA 1830.

A beautiful and elegant cherry cased Dachluhr. The light coloured case has the early feature of an opening top door and a lift out bottom door. Later Dachluhrs reverted to one full sized door. The case is of six light construction with lovely thin edgings to both the door and the sides of the clock. Even though the clock is in a light coloured cherry, all the doors and sides have been strung with boxwood. As usual with these cases it is finished with a tapered under curved base.

The dial and hands of the clock are a particularly fine feature. The dial is of two piece construction with silvered brass chapter ring and inner circle and both the inner and outer bezels are beautifully engine turned and gilded. The use of an engine turned inner bezel is always a mark of the highest quality. The hands which are of blued steel are nicely shaped and finished.

The month duration timepiece movement has fine wheelwork with very thin wheels in order to reduce the friction and thus give month duration from a weight no larger than most normal eight day clocks. The clock has the usual brass cased weight hanging from a small fretted out pulley. The pendulum is a steel rod but with the addition of brass compensating bars to the side. These were an attempt to give a slight amount of temperature compensation, as they expand upwards at the same time as the steel rod expands downwards, without reverting to a full gridiron pendulum. The pendulum bob is of brass with a bishops mitre at the bottom and a small rating nut.

Unfortunately the clock, which would originally have been signed, has over the years lost its signature and when we first purchased this clock some years ago (it has just come back from the collector we originally sold it to) the signature was indistinguishable and therefore we were not able to reinstate it after re-silvering the dial.

All in all a beautiful small month duration Dachluhr of the finest proportions.
