ANTON PFEIFFER IN MARATHONE. AN EXCEPTIONAL AND EARLY EIGHT DAY GRANDE SONNERIE STRIKING LATERNDLUHR IN A WALNUT, ELM AND EBONISED CASE. CIRCA 1820.

An early and important Laterndluhr by this well known maker. The unusual case typical of the country cases used by Pfeiffer in the early part of his career. It has a mixture of walnut for the main part of the case with elm, which is better figured, for the doors. The backboard and the centre of the architectural top are ebonised. The case employs large glass areas with a fine carcase to give an impression of lightness. The hood has an opening front door and slides off. The two bottom doors lift out.

The two piece silvered dial, with beautifully engine turned inner and outer rings, is signed for the maker "Anton Pfeiffer in Marathone." The hands are of an unusual shape seen on other clocks by this maker.

The eight day gong striking grande sonnerie movement strikes the quarters on two gongs mounted on the back mounting plate. It has a deadbeat escapement and is fully glass enclosed. The brass and steel rod pendulum has an unusual and small gridiron presumably for decorative purposes above the bob.

Length: 55" (140 cms.)
